large regency landscape
This garden surrounded a grade II listed Georgian house and included a tennis court, stream and large rectangular lawn, with a number of mature trees and shrubs. My main design priorities were to incorporate a new swimming pool and pool house and to provide a new formal terrace by the house following renovations to the property, as well as introducing new screening for the front and tree planting. The property was in a conservation area with tree preservation orders in place, so the design had to take account of potential restrictions.
There was only one suitable site for the pool, which was some distance from the house. To create both a physical and visual link between the two the pool area was designed to be at the same height as the house terrace and a new path was created along the tennis court with a pleach of limes along one side and planting along the other. New planting around the lawn in the form of grasses, shrubs and perennials will provide screening and visual interest through the seasons. I designed the pool house in concept, in an ‘L’ shape to provide screening and a sense of enclosure.
The new house terrace was enlarged to be in scale with the house, and given a stone balustrade in keeping with the period of the property. A new wall joins the house to the garage and creates a private east-facing courtyard, an ideal space for eating breakfast, as well as improving security.
Across the stream I introduced new waterside planting with architectural and bog-loving plants as well as new tree planting. I realigned one of the three existing bridges over the stream with the view from the kitchen, so as to draw the eye and invite people into the wilder garden.
